Step-by-Step Prayer Positions & Words

1. Stand Facing Qiblah & Opening Takbeer

Stand upright facing Makkah (Qiblah). Raise your hands to shoulder or ear level with palms facing forward, and say:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

"Allahu Akbar"

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest.

2. Qiyam & Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha

Fold your hands on your chest, right hand resting gently over the left wrist. Look down at the spot where your head will prostrate. Recite the Mother of the Quran (Al-Fatiha):

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۝ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۝ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ۝ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ۝ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ۝ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

"Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil-'aalameen. Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Maaliki Yawmid-Deen. Iyyaaka na'budu wa lyyaaka nasta'een. Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem. Siraatal-ladheena an'amta 'alayhim, ghayril-maghdoobi 'alayhim wa lad-daalleen. (Ameen)"

Meaning: In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked anger or of those who are astray.

3. Ruku' (Bowing)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow forward with your back straight and parallel to the ground. Rest your palms on your knees. In this serene position say 3 times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ

"Subhana Rabbiyal-'Azeem (3x)"

Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most Magnificent.

4. Standing Up from Bowing (I'tidal)

Rise back up to standing upright with hands down at your sides. While rising say:

سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ، رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ

"Sami' Allahu liman hamidah. Rabbana wa lakal-hamd."

Meaning: Allah hears whoever praises Him. Our Lord, all praise belongs to You.

5. Sujud (Prostration)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down into prostration. Place seven parts of your body firmly on the floor: forehead with nose, both palms, both knees, and tips of toes. Say 3 times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

"Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la (3x)"

Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

6. Sitting Between the Two Prostrations (Jalsah)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and sit back up comfortably on your legs. Rest your hands on your thighs. Say:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي ، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي

"Rabbighfir lee, Rabbighfir lee."

Meaning: My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me.

7. Second Sujud

Say "Allahu Akbar" and prostrate again in the exact same manner, repeating 3 times: "Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la". That completes ONE whole unit (Rak'ah)!

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

"Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la (3x)"

Meaning: Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

8. Tashahhud (Sitting for Testimony)

In the sitting position of the second and final Rak'ah, sit upright and recite the Tashahhud (greeting of peace), raising your right index finger gently when testifying:

التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَىٰ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

"At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat. As-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-saliheen. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasooluh."

Meaning: All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

9. Tasleem (Concluding the Prayer)

Turn your face gently to the right shoulder and say: "Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah". Then turn your face gently to the left shoulder and say: "Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah". Your prayer is complete!

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ

"Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah"

Meaning: May the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you.

Ease and Gradual Progression in Islam

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that a newcomer who cannot recite the Quran yet can simply say words of remembrance in prayer:

SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)
Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah)
La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
