What is Zakat?
Zakat literally means "purification and growth." If a Muslim possesses savings above a certain minimum threshold (called the Nisab) for a full year, they give a modest 2.5% of their surplus savings to support the poor, orphans, and those in distress.
Sadaqah (Voluntary Charity)
While Zakat is annual, Sadaqah is voluntary charity given at any moment. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "Smiling in the face of your brother is charity. Removing harm from the path is charity. Even a kind word is charity."
